Dr. Sheri Longboat

Associate Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Science, Wilfrid Laurier University

Dr. Longboat (she/her) is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Science, Wilfrid Laurier University. She is a mixed Mohawk Ukrainian and member the Six Nations of the Grand River with over 25 years experience working with and within First Nations communities in lands and resources, education and training, and research and capacity-building. Her community-engaged interdisciplinary research focus on water planning, management, and governance in the context of security, sustainability, justice, and change. Since completing her PhD in 2013, she has published over 35 articles, recently co-edited the book Local Communities and the Mining Industry, Economic Potential and Social and Environmental Responsibilities, and co-authored a commissioned report for the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, Indigenous and Western Knowledge: Bringing Diverse Understandings of Water Together in Practice

Dr. Longboat holds a PhD and MA, Wilfrid Laurier University (Geography), BEd, Brock University (Intermediate/Senior, Geography and General Science); and honours BES University of Waterloo (Environment & Resource Studies and Geography). Prior to joining Laurier in 2024, she was an associate professor in Rural Planning and Development, School of Environmental Design and Rural Development at the University of Guelph, where she remains Associated Graduate Faculty and Adjunct Professor.
